MY WORK
David specialises mainly in finely turned
decorative yet functional bowls and
individual vessels
He uses designs which bring out the natural beauty of the variations in colour, texture and figuring in the wood. Natural imperfections, such as knots, splits and captured bark, are often used to enhance a piece which will nearly always lead to a change in the original design and form as the piece is being worked.
Burning and using a special tool for adding a
textured feel to the wood is sometimes used to
highlight an area of the piece such as the rim or base. A light wax or natural oil finish is used to produce a high quality finish, which is irresistibly tactile and appealing to the eye.
David’s one off pieces are signed on the base, which also states the type of wood used. The majority of his work is crafted using local Welsh wood from sustainable sources. Some from wind blown trees and others from managed woodland.
He has said that many interesting pieces have
come from timber which people have thrown
out for the bonfire.
